I should have been an easy homecoming for Angela Merkel. Instead, as the boos and catcalls rose from the crowd in Wittenberg marketplace, a shadow of panic crossed the face of the German conservative leader and she suddenly resembled a frightened schoolgirl who had strayed into the bad part of town. Her hand, held aloft in a friendly wave, curled into a soft fist.
