Europe's textile war with China - and itself
Chinese-made bras, blouses and T-shirts are piling up at customs checkpoints across Europe, having already bumped up against import limits set earlier this year. The European Union has sent a team of officials to Beijing to negotiate a way out of the crisis. But European retailers are just as annoyed at the quotas as the Chinese

Innocent Brazilian's shooting in London metro
Where are the images?
Police officers and station managers were at odds last night over the existence of crucial CCTV-footage of the shooting of a Brazilian man wrongly suspected of being a suicide bomber. None of the cameras at the scene of the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes at Stockwell Tube station on 22 July were working, a police document revealed.

This is Europe
Siena, Italy
It was the perfect way to begin the day in Siena. As I lay back on the sun-warmed bricks of the Piazza del Campo, staring up at the cloudless Tuscan sky, waiting for my four-shot due doppio espresso to kick in, it was almost impossible to imagine the chaos of the famed Palio in this tranquil space.

German election getting emotive
I should have been an easy homecoming for Angela Merkel. Instead, as the boos and catcalls rose from the crowd in Wittenberg marketplace, a shadow of panic crossed the face of the German conservative leader and she suddenly resembled a frightened schoolgirl who had strayed into the bad part of town. Her hand, held aloft in a friendly wave, curled into a soft fist.

That's good news for the Europeans who dream with the end of violence. The Northern Ireland-based battalions of the Royal Irish Regiment are to be disbanded as part of the Army response to the IRA ending its armed campaign.
